Train derailment evacuees still wait to return home

PLASTER ROCK, N.B. – Residents of the small community of Wapske, near Plaster Rock, still don’t know when they’ll be able to go home, four days after a CN train derailment forced them from their homes.

About 150 people were told to leave their homes near the crash site after tankers carrying liquid petroleum gas and crude oil erupted in flames following the derailment.

Many of the evacuees attended a meeting last night.

Some say leaving for so long and not knowing when they can return has been frustrating.

Ann Powers says she has a couple of concerns.

“When we can get into our homes and the water…is the environment going to be okay once we do get back into our homes?”

She says officials have assured her that environmental tests will be done on her well water to determine when it’s safe to consume.

CN spokesman Jim Feeny says claims officers have begun working with residents to deal with compensation related to the evacuation and any property damage.
