Nova Scotia working on cat abandonment laws

The province is considering making it illegal to abandon cats, but it’s not clear know how such a law would be enforced.
Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell says the wild cat population is out of control, and the move would tackle the province’s feral cat population.
He says it’s an animal saftey issue.
“We’re trying to get a system around, to make it illegal, hopefully,” said Colwell. “To be able to enforce it’s going to be a very difficult thing to do. But at least we’re looking at it to see what kind of regulation we can come up with to cover it.”
Colwell adds they may also put in a clause that would allow municipalities to make their own bylaws as well.
“Still tossing around a lot of different ideas, and this will all be coming out once we put the sort of initial regulations out for review by the organizations that’ve been working on this so diligently,” said Colwell.
He hopes the change can be brought in this spring.
