Halifax school board defends no-bus, open-schools storm day

Wednesday’s decision to keep schools within the Halifax Regional School Board open is not sitting well with some.

Some parents are questioning the decision to run classes when all of the board’s school buses were pulled off the road.

The HRSB was the only board in Nova Scotia to keep its schools open during the storm, and spokesperson Doug Hadley says the decision was made based on what they though was going to happen with the weather.

“We had to make the decision on what we felt was the information we had, and whether we felt we could operate,” said Hadley. “The end decision was we did.”

As for the buses, Hadley says they go to the company that provides the buses for their thoughts before the call is made.

“Stock Transportation does a thorough investigation of all the conditions, and they give us a recommendation,” said Hadley.

The bus company was concerend that the roads would be bad in the afternoon so they recommended that the buses be pulled, and ultimatley that’s what the board did.
