Concerns being raised over cancellation of U.N.B. Bathurst nursing program

BATHURST, N.B. – New Brunswick Liberals are raising concerns over the University of New Brunswick’s decision to discontinue its nursing program in Bathurst.
The program would end after 2017.
Health critic Donald Arseneault says 39 per cent of New Brunswick nurses are over the age of 50 and he’s concerned there could soon be a shortage.
“The statistics and the demographics of the nurses in New Brunswick are quite alarming and the decisions they’re making by cancelling programs or sending some nurses home is going to have an effect on long-term objectives.”
Post-secondary Education Minister Jody Carr says the government is working to ensure that people are matched
with jobs that need to be filled.
The news comes at word of nursing layoffs in the province. The New Brunswick Nurses Union is expected to have more to say on the issue later today.
