HALIFAX – The chairman of the Halifax Regional School Board says he welcomes a broad review of the province’s education system.
Gin Yee says he’s hopeful the examination will provide ways to improve student outcomes, even if that means lengthening the school year.
Education Minister Karen Casey appointed Myra Freeman to lead the review that will look at everything from curriculum and technology to how long students are in school.
Casey says the review will take in all grades from primary to 12 and could bring changes to the system as early as next fall after the panel starts consultations in April.
Freeman served as lieutenant governor from 2000 to 2006 and was a teacher for more than 25 years.
She will work with five other panel members to gather input from people across the province on the system’s strengths and weaknesses.
Their report is due in October.
