Arson likely cause of lighthouse fire: fire chief

POINT ACONI, N.S. – A fire chief says someone set fire to a Cape Breton lighthouse that burned to the ground on the weekend.
Bill Capstick, chief of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department, says the Point Aconi lighthouse was not operational, which means the tower had no electrical power.
Capstick says the 11-metre glass-fibre tower probably burned to the ground on Friday night, but nobody noticed the landmark was gone until Sunday.
The lighthouse northwest of Sydney Mines has been vandalized several times in the past few years.
According to the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society, the lighthouse was built in 1989.
However, society president Barry MacDonald says there has been a lighthouse in that general area since 1874.
