Emera’s CEO sees compensation package jump 54 per cent, to 4.7M

We now know where some of that increase on you power bill is going.

As power rates continue to rise, so does the salary of Nova Scotia Power’s parent company’s top boss.

Emera’s president and CEO saw his total compensation jump 54 per cent last year.

According to documents released by the company yesterday, Chris Huskilson took home $4.7 million in 2013.

His base salary was a little more than $871,000 with the rest being made in shares, options, a bonus pension and other compensation.

The biggest change from 2012 was the bonus, which more than doubled. His incentive plan was worth $1.3 million in 2013, up from $607,000 in 2012.

The company says it’s just rewarding results and according to its 2014 management information circular, they decided to raise Huskilson’s compensation after a review determined it was well below the average for comparable companies.

Huskilson wasn’t the only Emera executive to see a sweet salary.

Executive vice-president of business development Nancy Tower took home $1.7 million and executive vice-president Rob Bennett, the former president and CEO of Nova Scotia Power, also saw his compensation top out at $1.7 million.

New Nova Scotia Power resident and CEO Bob Hanf took in $1.2 million.

A new law means ratepayers are covering about $200,000 of Hanf’s pay packet, with the rest being covered by Nova Scotia Power shareholders.
