Coast guard raises ship that sunk in Bridgewater harbour

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – An old trawler that sank two weeks ago in the LaHave River was floating again Tuesday afternoon, although the Ryan Atlantic II was listing at a steep angle.

Keith Laidlaw of the Canadian Coast Guard says several tonnes of water still on board needs to be removed to upright the vessel.

Laidlaw says four pumps extracted water from the hull and he estimates more than 550 tonnes of water was in the boat to start with.

The water that was pumped out was fed into an area around the Ryan Atlantic II surrounded by an absorbent boom to contain oil and any other pollutants.

They were soaked up by absorbent pads that coast guard officials removed by hand.

Laidlaw says officials won’t know why the ship sank until they are able to inspect the engine room.
