The SPCA has seized more than 120 cats from a Dartmouth home, and the three residents have been charged with animal cruelty for keeping them in an unsanitary environment.
SPCA spokesperson Ashley Burke told The Chronicle Herald they received a complaint about a bad smell coming from the home, and workers had to put on hazardous-materials gear before entering.
Despite the conditions, Burke said the cats have been well fed, are flea-free and show no signs of disease, however their health will be checked and the animals will be vaccinated.
Burke believes about 8 of the cats were pregnant, and since the seizure, two more litters have been born.
She said the SPCA was told about 5-years ago, there were only 4 or 5 cats in the home and stressed the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
The felines have been dispersed to various animal shelters throughout Nova Scotia and once the cats are healthy they will be up for adoption.
