Halifax Water rates going up nearly 13 per cent on Tuesday

Something to think about the next time you turn on the tap: Halifax Water rates jump 12.9 per cent on Tuesday. It’s the third increase in the last few years.

Water rates went up 8.7 per cent July 1, 2013 and a 27 per cent increase in 2011.

Kevin Lacey of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says that’s not acceptable, because we continue to watch executive salaries balloon.

“Given the rate of increase over such a short period of time, ratepayers deserve to be outraged at the amount these salaries are going up,” said Lacey.

He says the Halifax Water GM’s salary has jumped 35 per cent in the last five years.

But Lacey explains the UARB does have it’s eye on Halifax Water.

“The UARB rapped their knuckles in 2010 after they increased salaries between 20 and 40 per cent before the previous rate increase,” said Lacey.

He says executive salaries were also mentioned in this round too, but the rate hike was still approved.
