HALIFAX – Parents at a Halifax-area daycare are scrambling to find alternatives for their children after the unannounced closure of the Cobequid Children’s Centre over the weekend.
A spokeswoman for the province said Monday that officials with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development were caught off guard by the shuttering of the Lower Sackville centre.
Department spokeswoman Shelley Thompson said the first notice the province received about the centre’s closing came from upset parents Monday morning.
She says legislation requires operators to notify the province 120 days in advance of a closure, and she said sudden closures are unusual.
The centre is licensed to care for up to 75 children and had about 45 children enrolled.
The department is compiling a list of all daycares in the area with vacancies, and it is encouraging parents to contact the province for assistance.
