Halifax Metro Centre set to get new name

The Halifax Metro Centre may not be the Halifax Metro Centre for much longer.
The city is going through submissions for a new name, from bidders with big bucks.
Halifax spokesperson Jennifer Stairs says anyone, a business or an individual, was welcome to submit a proposal for the re-naming of the Metro Centre before the deadline which closed on Friday.
“We kept it very wide open because we weren’t sure what the interest would be like,” she explains.
Stairs says the venue needs about $500,000 a year to offset renovation costs including seating, concession booth and washroom upgrades.
“They’d like to be able to upgrade some of those things to possibly bring in more people and enhance the experience for folks who go there,” she says.
The 36-year-old Metro Centre should have a new name for the next Mooseheads season.
Nothing will be finalized until Regional Council gives its blessing.
The evaluation committee will be made up of city staff and representatives of Trade Centre Limited.
