Students leave Halifax, leaving behind curbside furniture piles

Exams are done, bags are packed and student are making their annual pilgrimage home for the summer.

Whats left behind — garbage and used furniture — can create a messy problem in our city and the municipality is keeping a close eye on it.

The municipality will pick up one bulky item on garbage day every two weeks so it’s not illegal to put an old couch to the curb.

It’s when there is a couch, some chairs, a kitchen table and a mattress that things get messy.

“If you do see it’s becoming a problem, and perhaps things aren’t being collected, if students are just putting it out at the curb at the inappropriate times, residents can call 311 to file a report,” said HRM spokesperson Jennifer Stairs.

She said the building’s landlord is responsible for what their tenants throw out, and they can and will be held responsible.

“We can either ticket them, and that’s a $233 ticket, or we can remove the waste and send the bill to the landlord,” said Stairs.

Stairs says the city has been proactive this year by advertising on the various campuses what is acceptable for garbage and what’s not.
