Cogswell Interchange redesign to be debated today

Halifax’s Cogswell Interchange may be approved for a much-needed facelift, as the executive committee meets today to debate the Cogswell Lands Plan.
Halifax regional councillors were given first looks at the proposal plan on Friday for a project that would demolish and reconstruct the intersection, adding five “mixed-use” development blocks, an urban greenway, and the realignment of Barrington Street as the main entry point into downtown.
Councillor Waye Mason told Metro News the housing blocks could bring in about 2,500 people, boosting the future downtown population up to 4,000 over the next 10-years.
The detailed design plan also includes ideas for the expansion of Granville Mall into a larger square, street parking, wide sidewalks, bike lanes and a transit block.
HRM included $750,000 in their 2014/2015 budget for the plan, which covers a 16-acre district in Downtown Halifax.
If approved, the entire project could take 13-years to complete, but Mason said he hopes to see a timeline with a sooner date.
