Backlands development plan scrapped by tie vote

A large forested area along Purcells Cove Road will remain free of development after a motion to allow for low density housing was defeated at Regional Council yesterday.

A tie vote scrapped a plan that would have changed the zoning on the property from urban reserve to rural commuter, which would have allowed for septic field and wells to be dug.

Catherine McKinnon of the Backlands Coalition citizens’ group told Metro Halifax, she was surprised the vote was close and she had been expecting more councillors to retain the current designation on the land.

After the vote, Councillor Stephen Adams tabled a motion instructing city staff to look into a process that would change the ownership of the lands to the public, a move that McKinnon said is worth exploring.
