SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The premier of Prince Edward Island says he wants changes to the EI program reversed.
Robert Ghiz says that’s his position regardless of what an upcoming report says about the impact of the federal changes.
The premier made his comment yesterday following a two-day meeting of the Atlantic premiers in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Last year the Atlantic premiers commissioned a panel to study the impact of Employment Insurance changes on the region.
This week the premiers got to look at a draft report, but they’re not saying much about what they’ve seen.
Under new federally created rules people who frequently claim EI need to prove they’re actively seeking work.
Workers must also accept a job within 100 kilometres of their home if they’re qualified and the pay is at least 70 per cent of their salary.
The office of federal Employment Minister Jason Kenney says its studies show less than one per cent of EI disqualifications have to do with the federal government’s changes to EI.
