School board votes to keep Park West P-9

Park West School teaches grades P-9, and after much debate, it’s going to stay that way.

Over the past few months, there were some people wanting the school to shrink its size, pushing for a P-6 option, while grades 7-9 switched to Clayton Park Junior High.

Last night, the Halifax Regional School Board voted 6-4 in favour of keeping the school as is.

Originally, the Boundary Review Committee had recommended the school split up their grades, but changed their minds a couple weeks ago after hearing many opposing views from parents.

District 6 school board member, Sheryl Blumenthal-Harrison told Metro News the main issue was the safety of the students, who would have had to walk a bit far to get to the junior high.

The two schools are 2.5 kilometres apart, about a 30 minute walk from one to the other.

Another concern about the school was overcrowding.

According to their summary report from last year, Park West had about 800 students enrolled, and their math and literacy test results were above the school board’s average in every grade.
