Fisherman dies after falling off bridge in Sheet Harbour

Sheet Harbour RCMP said they got a call at around 5:30 p.m. yesterday when local boaters found the body of a fisherman near Sober Island Bridge.

RCMP said when paramedics arrived, they tried to resuscitate the man, but he had already been in the water for about a half hour.

Staff Sgt. Amy Matchett said the 76-year-old was fishing on the bridge, casting off when his line got snagged on the bottom.

“Him and another man had been fishing off the wharf, and his fishing line had gotten caught on something and he was trying to loosen it, and when he was doing that, he fell off the wharf,” she said. “Upon arrival, the man had been taken by the tide.”

The fisherman was pronounced dead at the scene after fire crews, EHS, police and locals all responded to the call.

RCMP haven’t released the man’s name, and they said the accident is still being investigated.
