Permanent memorial for Raymond Taavel planned

A couple of local groups are trying to make sure Raymond Taavel’s legacy in activism lives on forever.

Taavel was killed outside of a bar in the north end of Halifax in 2012.

The Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project and the Gottingen 250 Festival are looking to create a permanent memorial for Taavel.

Nathaniel Smith sits on the festival’s committee and told Global News there is a healing garden where Taavel died, but that has to be removed because of development and for the festival’s stage in September.

“With its removal we want to make sure that the process was respectful, and people who believe that site means something to them have an opportunity to come and to be a part of the removal of the garden,” said Smith.

Kate Shewan with the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project said a permanent memorial for Taavel is important.

“I think just to be able to have something to remember him by in this location, in 10 or 20 years even, people will be able to read that and ask questions about Raymond and what he did for the community,” said Shewan.

A public meeting has been held to talk about ideas for the memorial, including a plaque or a bench.
