Police warn store owners of potential debit machine scam

Halifax Regional Police are warning local retail shops of two men who were visiting north-end businesses last week, claiming to be debit service representatives.

Constable Holly Tooke told News 95.7 the men went in to four different stores in the Agricola Street-area on Friday, potentially trying to install debit devices that would intercept card information.

“We’re encouraging people to report if they’ve had this occur at their business,” said Tooke.  “And, also to remind business owners to verify the identity of any unfamiliar sales people that they have come into their business.”

Tooke said the men are described as Greek or Middle Eastern descent, between 30 and 40 years old, and they were both dressed in suits.

Police are asking business owners in Halifax to report any suspicious behaviour to them by calling 490-1985.
