Kids from all across Halifax are heading back to class today and police are reminding motorists to obey the rules of the road.
RCMP Constable Mark Skinner told News 95.7 drivers should be on the lookout for school zones, which are in effect whenever children are present.
“If the speed zone is 50 kilometres per hour or less, motorists are reminded to slow down to 30 kilometres an hour,” said Skinner. “If the speed limit is more than 50 kilometres an hour, motorists need to slow down to 50 kilometres an hour.”
Skinner added drivers disobeying a crossing guard could face a fine of $693.95, and drivers who fail to stop for a school bus when the red lights are flashing could have to pay out over $400, both infractions come with a 6 demerit point penalty.
Skinner said parents should talk to their children about school bus safety.
“Remind them to make sure to not distract the school bus driver, and to sit down in the seats while the school bus is in operation.”
The Nova Scotia RCMP twitter account had additional advice, telling students to “take 5 steps back from the road and to line up in single file” when they see the school bus coming.
The HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit will be patrolling school zones throughout the region this month to educate drivers and enforce motor vehicle regulations.
