Former mayor Peter Kelly heads west for work

The municipality of Westlock County, Alberta has a new chief administrative officer, and it’s a name familiar to Haligonians.

According to a newspaper in that community, Westlock County council held a special meeting Tuesday to appoint former HRM mayor Peter Kelly to the municipality’s top post.

Reeve Bud Massey, the equivalent of a mayor in Westlock, told the Rick Howe Show Thursday he is aware there were some issues with Kelly when he was mayor of Halifax.

“I don’t believe that a couple issues define a person,” he said. “I think what defines a person is when you look at their total record, and the record is pretty awesome.”

Kelly told The Westlock News he already has some ideas for changes he’d like to pursue in the community.

He told the Rick Howe Show Thursday he visited the area in the spring during a trip to see his son.

“As I was out here, it seemed to be very active, and a lot of opportunities,” Kelly said. “And this is one that came my way, and it’s one that I further pursued.”

Westlock is about an hour north of Edmonton.

Kelly did not re-offer in the 2012 fall municipal election and recently worked in business development for Target Pest Control.
