Halifax Transit changes direction on redesign plans

The city’s transit authority has changed its mind on a plan to overhaul the transit network in Halifax.

Transit managers are now saying testing has showed a network-based transfer system isn’t ideal for our city, due to the population not being large enough to support the frequency of routes and make it work.

The goal of the major overhaul was to make the network more simple.

Halifax Transit says it’s still looking at more substantial changes, but there are some areas that work well and they don’t want to ruin a good thing.

Some of those changes the transit authority is exploring is a hybrid system that uses some transfer-based routes as well as single seat rides, where a commuter takes the same bus from the outskirts to the downtown core.

Public consultation are expected to be held this winter.
