Flight diverted to Halifax after man dies on board

An Air France Airbus en route from Paris to New York made an emergency landing in Halifax yesterday afternoon after a passenger on board fell fatally ill.

Not many details are known about how the 58-year-old American man died, but RCMP Sgt. Al LeBlanc said it was likely due to natural causes.

“An autopsy will be performed and, really, that’s the only way we can determine the exact cause of death,” he said. “But at this time, it’s important to note there is nothing suspicious about this.”

LeBlanc said the man died before the jetliner landed, and medical examiners were called in to take the body off the plane.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport spokesman, Peter Spurway, said they’ve never had an airplane of this size land in Halifax.

“The Airbus 380 is the world’s largest passenger aircraft, so yes, it would be the largest passenger aircraft that has landed at our airport.”

The Air France flight continued on to New York’s JFK airport after its emergency stop in Halifax.
