A highway protest is planned for today near Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, to oppose the Alton Natural Gas project.
Mi’kmaq leader Cheryl Maloney says the protest on Highway 102 won’t cause major traffic jams, but is just intended to get the First Nation’s perspective across.
She says the project hasn’t received the consent of native groups for a plan to store natural gas in salt caverns that are dissolved using river water.
Alton Natural Gas Storage says it has consulted with the Mi’kmaq on numerous occasions and remains open to continuing talks.
The demonstration will occur between exits 11 and 12 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Maloney added protesters are working with police to ensure traffic is not effected too much and if it gets too backed up protesters will step back.
