Chemical explosion at UNB injures two

FREDERICTON – A small explosion at a chemical lab at the University of New Brunswick has sent two people to hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency responders were called to a building on Garland Court in Fredericton today.

City spokeswoman Alycia Morehouse could not say which chemicals were involved in the explosion, but she says there was no fire.

The two injured people were believed to be in the room when the explosion happened, but Morehouse did not know whether they were students or teachers.

The Fredericton Fire Department tweeted that the explosion happened in a second-floor lab and has been contained.

It also said a hazardous materials team was assessing the situation.

The building was evacuated.
