Halifax Transit redesign plan expected in January

Halifax Transit has given council an update on its redesign plan.

The last time Eddie Robar appeared before council, he left people confused thinking Halifax Transit had scrapped its previous redesign strategy.

This week, Robar set the record straight — the redesign is a few months behind, but he says Halifax Transit is meeting the objectives set by council and the public

“We’re doing a full system redesign,” said Robar.  “We’re looking at every route we have in the system, what we’re doing with them now, what we could potentially do with them in the future, and making sure we’re achieving a system that’s going to generate ridership for the future.”

Robar admitted Halifax Transit could have worded its report more clearly and said challenges are delaying the work.

“The sprawl is definitely one of them, having a community as large as ours,” said Robar.

Ross Soward with the group It’s More Than Buses said public perception of transit is a big hurdle that will need to be overcome.

“I think a big thing is to get people to look at it as a real option,” said Soward.

Soward said a full overhaul of the transit system will be needed to make that happen, but he’s anxious for the opportunity to see the new strategy.

He’ll get his chance in January when Halifax Transit presents their plans on specific routes and frequencies, which will be followed by 10-weeks of public consultations.
