Nova Scotia to seek public feedback on future of university system

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s advanced education minister says the public will get a chance to weigh in as the government considers the future of the university system.

Kelly Regan says public feedback will be sought over the next month on ways to support universities through a series of meetings with students, parents and businesses along with university faculty and presidents.

Regan says the government is already in discussions with university presidents about what needs to be done to bolster a system that is under financial strain.

She says the university system isn’t sustainable as it currently exists and faces a 50-million-dollar funding gap by 2018 unless changes are made.

The government says the information gathered will help develop a strategic paper outlining the long-term direction for universities and the next memorandum of understanding between universities and the province.

Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie says while new ways are needed to make universities accountable to taxpayers and help the province compete economically, another study isn’t the answer.
