Opening date set for new Halifax Central Library

Only a select few have gotten a sneak peak at the new Halifax Central Library on Spring Garden Rd., but on Sat. Dec. 13, their doors will finally be open to everyone.

Halifax Public Libraries’ Bruce Gorman said it’s not going to be your traditional library.

“We’re not a book warehouse. There’s no ‘shh’ in libraries anymore. We’re social spaces, we’re places where people can come and create whatever environment they like.”

CEO Asa Kachan said they expect a lot more visitors to stop by the new, five-storey state-of-the-art building.

“We anticipate as soon as we open the doors that we will have double the number of customers walk through the door, as compared to the Spring Garden Road branch.”

Through the library’s “Share the Wow” campaign, they’ve raised $4.6-million of their $6.4-million dollar fundraising goal.

The cost of the building itself checks out at about $58-million in total.
