Several serious charges have been laid against a student at Charles P. Allen High School after a sawed-off rifle was found in his backpack yesterday afternoon.
According to Halifax Regional Police they followed an annonymous tip, scoped out a student at the Bedford school and arrested him without incident.
Staff Sgt. Lindsay Hernden said the 17-year-old boy will be facing numerous charges this morning, including possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon.
“Police that were at the scene identified the youth and he was brought into the office at the school and was searched and the firearm was located,” he said. “There was a knife located as well, and he was taken into custody.”
Halifax Regional School Board’s Doug Hadley told Global News the whole incident was wrapped up relatively quickly.
“There was not a lockdown. There was a large police presence at the school once they identified who the person might be. They very willingly cooperated, and the school didn’t feel there was a need to put the school into lockdown, because the matter had been dealt with and the police were still on site.”
Many students weren’t even aware of what was going on at the time.
“I saw a whole bunch of cop cars and I was wondering what was going on,” said Coral Bowser. “I thought maybe it was a lockdown or something.”
Another student, Kaitlyn Hann, told Global News she found out about the incident through social media.
“They didn’t tell us anything,” she said. “It was on Twitter and Facebook and stuff.”
According to police, the suspect has been in custody since his arrest.
