Halifax Water has filed an application with the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to have water rates bumped up over the next two years.
The first rate increase would take effect May 1, 2015 and would see prices rise about $47 per year, or, $0.13 cents per day.
The second bump is set to follow a year later, in April 2016. Water prices in HRM would then go up about $55 per year, compared to what current customers are paying right now.
That works out to an increase of $0.15 cents a day, or $0.02 extra cents a day on top of the 2015 price hike.
Over the next three decades, Halifax Water said its integrated resource plan predicts $2.6 billion in investment is needed for asset renewal, regulatory compliance, and system growth.
According to a release from the utility, the rate increases are backed by the adoption of a recent regional development charge, asset renewal and new federal regulations.
The public hearing for the rate increase request will take place February 23-27th, 2015.
