The RCMP say the driver of a tour bus fell asleep before it crashed in Cape Breton last year resulting in one death and 10 injuries.
Police say they have decided not to lay charges in the July 13 crash.
The bus was carrying 21 people, including the driver, on a 10-day tour of the Maritimes when it went off the road on the Cabot Trail highway south of Neil’s Harbour and landed on its side.
Police say an extensive investigation determined the driver had fallen asleep.
RCMP Sgt. Alain LeBlanc wouldn’t comment on this specific investigation, but said “most buses … have video on board.”
He added, in order to lay charges, police must determine that a crime has been committed and that the person who committed it intended to do so.
“This is clearly not the case [in this incident],” he said.
The Mounties say Pennsylvania-based Executive Coach Inc., which owns the bus, and the passengers have been updated on the outcome of their investigation.
The company has said that 70-year-old Joyce Bowers of Ephrata, Pa., died in the crash.
