Halifax Water wants to cut back on its wastewater treatment over the winter, but first it wants to hear from the public.
The plan is called “seasonal disinfection,” and it would mean shutting down bacteria-killing UV lights between Nov. 1 and March 31.
Utility spokesman James Campbell says there are two main reasons for the proposal.
“The main reason we’re doing it is they’re enormous consumers of electricity,” he said.
“We can save a lot of money on electricity, cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, and … extend the life of those UV systems.”
Campbell says all other treatment processes would continue, so there will be no strange odours or floating objects in the harbour.
The utility is accepting public input on the plan until Feb. 20, then the proposal goes to the province’s environment department.
