Explosion ‘destroys’ home in Waterville

WATERVILLE, N.S. – The province’s fire marshal has finished his assessment of an explosion at a home in the Annapolis Valley.

Harold Pothier says the blast was caused by a combination oil- and wood-burning furnace.

In a release, he says six people were transported to hospital, and five of them have since been released.

Waterville fire Chief Wayne Johnstone says smoke was pouring out of the home on Porter Lane when firefighters arrived after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

“Once we entered the building we discovered there was very little fire, but a lot of smoke, and heavy damage to the house,” Johnstone said.

He says there were three adults and three children inside at the time of the explosion, and all were conscious and alert when they were picked up by ambulances.

The Office of the Fire Marshal says the one-story home was “destroyed” in the blast.
