First commuter rail details revealed

A consulting team presented its vision for commuter rail in Halifax to a packed house at Sunnyside Mall in Bedford last night.

The plan would use existing CN rail lines along the Basin to bring the service to Bedford, Lower Sackville and as far as Elmsdale.

Cost estimates for establishing commuter rail range from $26-million to bring the service to Cobequid Road in Lakeview, to up to $130-million to extend it to Elmsdale.

The consulting team estimates service could open as soon as 2018.
