MLA calls out school board over roof problems

A Liberal MLA is calling out the Halifax Regional School Board for deferring maintenance at JL Ilsley High School, as the school opened on Friday for the first time this week.

Brendan Maguire represents the riding of Halifax-Atlantic, running from Spryfield down to Crystal Crescent Beach.

He says he and his wife moved back to the area recently, so their kids could go to JL Ilsley.

“There’s a lot of great things going on at that school, but the fact of the matter is that school’s had deferred maintenance for years now, and it’s come home to roost,” he said.

Maguire says the province committed $1 million to the school last May for various improvements, including roof repairs.

Nine months later, he says a parking lot has been paved, but the roof is still leaking.

“If this is your house, and your driveway’s a mess and your roof is leaking, what do you prioritize?”

Maguire says if the school board can’t fix the problem, the province will step in.
