Roof collapses keep emergency crews busy

Snow loads kept fire crews in the city busy as roofs collapsed over the weekend.
The first was a vacant building in the Burnside Industrial Park and another was an automotive repair shop on Waverley Road.
Nobody was inside either building.
Halifax Fire Division Commander Lloyd Currie told Global News, the amount of snow on the roofs along with the rain and above zero temperatures added a lot of weight stress on buildings.
“It’s extremely important to get the weight off so that it doesn’t damage your building or collapse your roof,” said Currie.
Currie added people need to keep an eye on the amount of snow and ice buildup on their roofs.
