Farmers dealing with winter damage

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture says the province’s farmers are struggling to deal with damage caused by unusually heavy snowfall this past winter.

The frequency of storms meant farmers couldn’t clear off their buildings and equipment, and the weight of the snow has caused widespread damage.

For greenhouse growers, up to 75 per cent of some farmers’ buildings have collapsed and are beyond repair.

Some maple syrup farmers are dealing with kilometres of snow-covered tubing.

The damage is estimated at 8.5 million dollars and counting _ far higher than an average winter.

The federation is hoping the government will provide disaster relief.
