QEII cancels surgeries because of sterilization issue

The QEII Health Sciences Centre is cancelling surgeries that were supposed to happen Monday because of a sterilization issue, but the hopsital says any urgent or emergency surgeries will go ahead, using sterilized equipment from other facilites.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority says it will be performing surgeries at a “reduced capacity,” and it expects 80 surgeries to be cancelled.

Patients who were scheduled to have non-urgent surgery at the QEII on Monday will get a phone call to tell them their surgeries are cancelled.

A press release from the health authority says surgery staff, management and sterilization staff are working to fix the issue, which is says is limiting the hospital’s ability to sterilize all equipment.
