Stranded hikers rescued from Timberlea trail

TIMBERLEA, N.S. – Two lost hikers are safe after becoming lost on the Bluff Wilderness hiking trail in Timberlea on Wednesday night.

Halifax RCMP said they received a call from two women around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night, informing officers they had become lost after hiking the trail system.

RCMP, Halifax Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR), and an RCMP service dog were dispatched to the area, and they found the pair at around 11 p.m., roughly 11 km in to the woods.

Police said the search unit used the GPS on the hikers’ cell phones to determine their exact location, and Halifax GSAR transported them across a lake to the entrance of the trail.

RCMP said other than being hungry and tired, the 30-year-old from Halifax and 26-year-old from Sydney were in good health.

Police said the pair intended to do only the first loop of the four-loop trail system, but as darkness settled in, they realized they had gone too far and couldn’t make their way back through the rugged and unfamiliar terrain.
