Federal Halifax candidates to debate student issues Monday

HALIFAX – Federal election candidates in the riding of Halifax will take part in a debate Monday night, with a focus on student and youth issues ahead of the Oct. 19 election.

The Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students and the Dalhousie Univeristy Student Union are co-hosting the event, that gets underway at the union’s building on campus at 6:30 p.m.

Dan Nicholson, president of the Dalhousie Student Union, said one of the issues likely to come up is high tuition rates, which leave students with an average of $35,000 debt.

“It’s not just change for a recent grad, and that’s what we’re facing graduating in today’s climate where it’s almost necessary to have a degree to find a job,” Nicholson said.

High youth unemployment rates and the expanded use of internships are also big issues facing students according to Nicholson, who said he would like to see student’s show up to the debate to have a voice.

Students will be able to submit questions for the moderator to ask the candidates during the debate, which is also being live-streamed on Dalhousie University’s website.
