MADD Canada asking you not become impaired driving stat

HALIFAX – The president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada is urging people to avoid becoming another drunk driving statistic after a fatal crash near Beaver Bank early Sunday morning.

RCMP in Lower Sackville believe alcohol was a factor in a crash on Beaverbank Road that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, and also sent two others to hospital. A 19-year-old Lower Sackville woman remains in critical condition with a broken neck.

Angeliki Souranis said impaired driving deaths are 100 per cent preventable, and leave a path of destruction and senseless tragedy.

“Death doesn’t discriminate, we have way a high proportion of young people in that group and that needs to change.”

She said those looking to head out for a night on the town or a party at a friends house, need to already have a plan.

“Have a designated driver, take a cab, take public transportation,” Souranis said. “We just want everyone to arrive safe.”

“People think it’s never going to happen to them and we know that’s just not true.”

Souranis lost her son after he got in a car with an impaired driver, and she said that was despite her efforts to teach him it was wrong.

“He chose to get in the car with a friend of his that he trusted, and unfortunately it had disastrous consequences.”

She says with many holiday engagements on the horizon, it’s important to keep this in mind.

Souranis also reminds people if you see anyone who may be impaired to immediately dial 911 with a license plate number and a vehicle or suspect description.
