Canada’s gymnastics team, Halifax-native qualify for 2016 Olympics

HALIFAX – Halifax-native Ellie Black’s dream of representing Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics became closer over the weekend.

Black and the rest of the Canadian gymnastics squad placed 7th at the World Championships in Scotland over the weekend, qualifying the team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Canada can send five gymnasts to the Olympics in the team event.

Black, 20, has also qualified for the finals in the individual all-around category and on the beam, which will be contested later this week.

Black also represented Canada at the London Olympics in 2012.

The games in Brazil are scheduled to run Aug. 5 through Aug. 21, 2016.
