OTTAWA – Former MP Peter Stoffer thinks the New Democratic Party should drop the world “new” from its name.
The 18-year veteran politician, who lost his Sackville–Preston–Chezzetcook riding last week, suggests the New Democrats should consider becoming the Democratic party, saying people can digest that easily.
Stoffer also favours separating the federal and provincial wings of the N-D-P and abandon the 1961 agreement that brought the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the Canadian Labour Congress together to form the party.
He says the reality is that labour votes the way it wants to vote and that’s the way it should be.
Stoffer is among dozens of defeated New Democrats going through the painful process of clearing offices and saying goodbye to staff.
He’s going to sell off the pool table and dozens of hats and buttons in his eccentric Ottawa office and donate the proceeds to charity.
