Dartmouth man taken to hospital as police investigate Cole Harbour shooting

COLE HARBOUR, N.S. – A 22-year-old Dartmouth man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries and a suspect remains at large after a shooting on a residential street in Cole Harbour Thursday morning.

RCMP Cpl. Greg Church said a male suspect shot the victim through the driver’s side car window of the Acura he was in around 9:25 a.m. this morning on Merrimac Drive, before fleeing the scene on foot.

The man was rushed to hospital by EMS with injuries to his face, according to the RCMP, where he remains in serious condition.

A neighbour in the area, Dorothy Horton, said she spoke to the victim’s aunt, who said he was shot three times but still conscious when he was taken from the scene by paramedics.

“His aunt said that he was hit in the chest and two in the arm,” Horton said. “He was moving, he wasn’t dead.”

Horton said she saw the suspect run down Clermont Crescent after the shooting, towards a wooded-area near Cole Harbour High School. Cpl. Church said a canine unit was brought in to track the suspect Thursday morning, but they were unable to locate him.

He said investigators don’t believe the shooting is random, but still said it’s still a scary incident for people in the neighbourhood.

“A very, very disturbing incident that has occurred,” said Church. “Public safety is a concern — there’s been a shooting this morning.”

Church couldn’t comment on whether the victim were known to police, but said their investigation is ongoing.

Investigators combed the scene around the parked car took place Thursday, also looking at items seemingly askew on the front lawn of a home across the street.

Students at Auburn High School and Cole Harbour High School were placed in lockdown after the shooting, but Halifax Regional School Board later put in a hold-and-secure protocol before lifting the ban altogether.

All students were reported safe by the school board.

Nearby Cole Harbour Place was also put on lockdown for a short time before being re-opened.
