Two men sentenced in 2013 Matthew Penney murder

HALIFAX – Two men who pleaded guilty to killing Matthew Penney and burning his body in a park near Enfield in 2013 have been handed their sentence.

Tyler Berry had previously pleaded guilty to accidently shooting Penney at a north-end Darmouth party on New Year’s Eve 2013, before removing the body with the party’s homeowner Jason MacKenzie.

Berry and MacKenzie burned the body in Oakfield Provincial Park, which was found by someone walking their dog on New Year’s Day 2014.

Berry was given an eight-year sentence, minus two-and-a-half years for time served.

MacKenzie was given a three-year sentence, subtracting two-and-a-half years for time already in custody.
