Planned Fall River quarry rally postponed

FALL RIVER, NS – A rally previously planned for Thursday by a group opposed to a proposed Fall River quarry has been postponed.

The group, “Stop the Fall River Quarry,” was to hold a rally outside the Legislature Thursday afternoon, but said the revoking of the government’s approval last month has complicated things.

The Department of Environment issued Scotian Materials Ltd. operating approval for the four-hectare project on Perrin Drive in Fall River — only to revoke the approval because of a lack of public consultation.

Stacy Rudderham, spokesperson for “Stop the Fall River Quarry,” said it’s not just the lack of consultation, the permit for the project still needs to be considered based on some of the other appeals that were received.

“Some of the details that have been submitted by these other groups could possibly revoke it permanently instead of just setting it back to a consultation process,” Rudderham said.

“I think that’s the fair way to look at this, is that they haven’t looked at all these other appeals.”

Rudderham said the group is holding off on Thursday’s planned rally until they find out what the next steps are for the file, but admits, “I’m not really sure when that’s going to happen.”

After Liberal MLA Andrew Younger was kicked out of caucus last week, Rudderham said all she knows is interim Minister Randy Delorey is acting on the issue.

Rudderham said she’s unaware of the province’s next steps.
