A woman and two young girls are dead following four-vehicle crash on outside Port Hawkesbury.
Nova Scotia RCMP Spokesperson Const. Mark Skinner says emergency crews responded to the collision on Highway 104 in Port Malcolm between exits 43 and 44 at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.
All three passengers in one of the vehicles died as a result of their injuries – a 26-year-old woman and two girls aged 12 and 13.
“Two of the vehicles were involved in a side-swipe collision which resulted in one of the vehicles spinning and being struck by a following vehicles in a t-bone manner,” said Skinner.
“The fourth vehicle was only involved in that it was hit with debris as the other vehicles collided.”
Skinner says the woman and the 12-year-old, who are both from Louisdale, died at the scene. The 13-year-old was rushed to the Strait Richmond Hospital. Preparations were underway to fly her to a Halifax hospital when she died.
There were no substantial injuries to occupants of the other vehicles.
Highway 104 is expected to remain closed until midnight and traffic is being re-routed onto the old highway 4. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
