HALIFAX – Some members of Halifax Regional Council want a report on the city’s current policy for paying down debt to try and free up more money for things like infrastructure.
Under the current policy, the city is mandated to pay down debt at a rate of three per cent per household, but Councillor Waye Mason tells The Chronicle Herald because the city’s debt is shrinking, he would like to see the actual amount of money being spent.
Councillor Tim Outhit said the has a problem with the city going deeper in to debt for basic services like paving and road repairs.
Council has asked for a report on the matter to be returned before budget talks.
