Halifax-area cleaning up after Saturday snowfall

HALIFAX – The cleanup continues on Sunday after roughly 35 centimetres of snow fell in some areas of the region late Saturday.

The snow tapered off shortly after midnight in the metro area, but not before it caused several delays and cancellations at the airport and several collisions on area roads Saturday.

RCMP and Regional Police reported no serious injuries due to these accidents.

Some areas in the region saw as little as 10 cm, but Environment Canada reports 40.2 cm of snow and ice pellets fell at the Halifax Airport on Saturday.

Winter operations crews were out clearing main priority routes within HRM on Saturday night before switching focus to side-streets and sidewalks.

The overnight parking ban will remain in effect overnight from 1 a.m. – 6 a.m. on Monday, according to the city.

The Halifax Running Club cancelled its club run for Sunday and some area churches cancelled their Sunday morning services.

Halifax Transit said all busses have resumed to regular routing after a number were placed on snow plans Saturday night.

The Halifax Airport is reporting a number of delays on the arrivals and departure boards on Sunday morning, so travellers are asked to check with their airline before their scheduled flight.

A broken watermain on Young Avenue in Halifax’s south-end caused some problems for Halifax Water crews, as they attempted to repair the main during the storm.

The break was reported on Saturday evening, leaving about 100 homes in the area without water or a loss of pressure, but all service was restored at 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to the utility.

Outside the Halifax-area, Nova Scotia’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal said on Sunday that 600 workers were actively clearing the province’s 23,000 kilometres of roads after most areas saw upwards of 30 cm of snow.

The Antigonish-area is said to have been hit the hardest but all main roads in the province are reportedly clear.

Drivers are asked to take caution if they come upon snow covered areas and to check with Department’s website on the status of Nova Scotia roads and highways.
